Activities for Groups

Task Day Activities

Nothing motivates members more than a task day activity. Here are some ideas to get members working.

Whilst you are involved in a task or event, have a poster telling people who you are and what you do. Talk to your green space visitors, you will encourage new members.

Litter Pick - probably a monthly chore, recycle bottles and cans

Bramble cutting - cut back brambles where they can be a hazard

Hedge Trim - trim back the overhanging branches and bushes over paths

Dead wood collection - collect fallen wood and pile in a secluded area to attract fungi and insects

Branch trim - trim off small lower and broken branches from trees

Collect Wild seeds - collect and sow wild flower seeds nearby in prepared plots

Take cuttings - wild or cultivated cuttings. Grow at home in yogurt pots for planting out later

Dig a ditch / Clear a ditch / Clear Culverts and Pipes - help drainage from a wet path or area

Balsam Bash - cut back or pull up Himalayan balsam in June, July, Aug, Sep before it seeds

Hole filling - fill holes in woodland paths and grass areas to avoid accidents (tip, use molehill soil)

Clean Paths - clear leaves, moss, debris from paths

Repair Fences - make simple repairs where possible

Tree/bulb/hedge planting - good family tasks and children will want to keep visiting their work

Painting/Preserving Outdoor Furniture - leave a Wet Paint sign and a dated photo as proof

Build a dead hedge - Protects sensitive areas. Use green tree cuttings weaved around posts

 

Events in the Greenspace

Combine events to make a mini-fun day. Make events very simple and have more of them to raise awareness of your greenspace. If you make events aimed at children, they bring adults with them.

 

Healthy Events

Walk a Mile in the Park - measure and make a route

Jogathon - jog for different ages, different lengths of time, etc.

Orienteering - arrange a simple orienteering course

 

Childrens Events

Teddy Bears Picnic - with parents, in the woods if you have one!

Tea in the Park - people bring soft drinks, cakes, chairs, etc., for themselves

Childrens Guided Walk - with parents, to spot birds, animals, insects, fungi and plants

Easter Egg Hunt - a real winner with the kids

RU Up 2 It - mini-sports day for kids and parents. Some ideas could be, Frisbee Golf, Bean Bag Throw, Ball in a bucket, 2 Line football, Frisbee or Ball relay, Ladder Golf.

Welly Throwing - a real winner with the kids from 0 to 100

Photo Display - look at different aspects like trees, close-ups, patterns

Autumn Leaf Art - Use fallen leaves to create collages

Autumn Sculpture - use collected cones, acorns, feathers, etc to make monsters

Pattern Rubbing - just a paper and wax crayon, rub tree bark, wood, concrete, bricks, etc
